Sky Sports reports that Mohamed Salah may not join the Saudi league next season due to a government decision to reduce spending in the football sector.
The “Egyptian King” announced his departure from Liverpool at the end of the current season, bringing to a close an illustrious journey at Anfield that began in 2017 and will end as the Reds’ all-time leading scorer in the English Premier League.
The 33-year-old has been linked with several Saudi clubs since then, most notably Al-Ittihad, who have been trying to sign Salah since 2023. It was reported that Al-Ittihad was prepared to make an astronomical offer that would make him one of the most expensive players in the world.
However, according to the latest report, the multiple crises in the Middle East have impacted the economic situation in Saudi Arabia, and the current trend is to reduce spending as much as possible, including the salaries paid to foreign players.
While interest in signing Mohamed Salah remains, instead of the previously proposed salary exceeding €100 million annually, the new offer is expected to be significantly lower, reflecting the current economic climate in the Arab country.
It remains to be seen whether Salah would welcome a move to the Roshan League for a salary similar to what he earned at Liverpool, especially since the MLS remains a viable option with a slightly higher pay cut.
It’s worth noting that Salah might continue playing in Europe, as he is attracting interest from Italian clubs in particular, who are keen for a return to Serie A after his successful stints with Fiorentina and Roma.
