Karim Benzema’s future at Al-Hilal has entered a highly complex phase after the French striker turned down a proposal from the club’s management to join a newly promoted Saudi Pro League side during the summer transfer window.
According to Saudi newspaper Arriyadiyah, Benzema informed Al-Hilal officials that he will not agree to leave unless he receives the entirety of his financial dues for the final year of his contract, alongside a full release that would allow him to choose his next destination freely.
Reports suggest Benzema earns roughly €100 million net per season. Should Al-Hilal decide to terminate his deal, fulfilling the final year of his contract could cost the club between 435 million and 440 million Saudi Riyals (SAR).
The rift extends beyond finances. Journalist Ben Jacobs reports that the former Ballon d’Or winner has requested assurances over his role, insisting on playing regularly in domestic matches. Benzema is reportedly unwilling to stay if relegated to a squad role or left out of the coaching staff’s primary plans.
Furthermore, Benzema firmly rejected a proposed compromise that would see him registered exclusively for the UEFA/AFC Champions League Elite while being excluded from the Saudi Pro League roster. His stance remains firm: either maintain a guaranteed starter status across all competitions or depart upon receiving his full financial payout.
The 38-year-old joined Al-Hilal on a free transfer from Al-Ittihad in February 2026 on an 18-month contract. Since his arrival, he has made 13 appearances across all competitions, scoring 9 goals and providing 5 assists.
While Al-Hilal’s board is eager to free up a foreign player slot to sign a new elite striker, negotiations remain heavily stalled due to the French legend’s strict financial and sporting demands.
