Renowned football insider Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Real Madrid is closing in on a deal to sign Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries, following an express request from incoming manager Jose Mourinho.
The Portuguese tactician is set to be officially appointed if Florentino Perez secures victory in Real Madrid’s presidential elections scheduled for this coming Sunday.
The “Special One” considers the signing of a defensively solid right-back an absolute necessity following the departure of Dani Carvajal, and to provide intense competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Real Madrid Set to Trigger Dumfries’ €20m Release Clause
Mourinho has personally chosen Dumfries for this role. Over the past few hours, negotiations between Real Madrid’s management and the player’s camp have advanced significantly and are moving in a highly positive direction.
The Spanish giants can finalize the transfer without even negotiating with Inter Milan, as they intend to trigger the €20 million release clause embedded in the Dutch international’s contract.
While Dumfries is highly keen on moving to the Santiago Bernabeu, the deal is currently on hold until the election results confirm Perez’s continuation in office.
Mourinho’s Defensive Overhaul: Konate, Carreras, and More
Dumfries was previously a target for Liverpool, but the departure of Arne Slot has made a move to Anfield highly unlikely. The defender was also linked with several European powerhouses, most notably Barcelona.
Should the board elections conclude as planned, Dumfries will join a massive defensive rebuild. Spanish reports indicate that Mourinho has also requested a backup left-back for Alvaro Carreras. Furthermore, Real Madrid has already secured a verbal agreement with Ibrahima Konate to bolster the center-back position, leaving a new central midfielder as the final piece of Mourinho’s summer wishlist.
