Marc-André ter Stegen has no intention of moving to a club outside of Spain, and perhaps doesn’t even like the idea of leaving Barcelona, making his departure from Barça next January doubtful.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the German goalkeeper isn’t interested in “exotic” destinations or a move to the English Premier League, despite interest from there, as family considerations in Barcelona remain his top priority.
Therefore, Girona immediately emerges as the most likely and best option for Ter Stegen, especially since the promising Catalan club has expressed direct interest in signing the 33-year-old.
With Dominik Livakovic’s departure to Dinamo Zagreb imminent, the club is actively searching for a new goalkeeper. Coach Michel has made no secret of his admiration for Ter Stegen, considering him a high-caliber addition capable of immediately raising the team’s quality.
Girona has offered Barcelona a loan deal for Ter Stegen until the end of the season, and Joan Laporta’s administration has shown considerable flexibility, even agreeing to pay 75% of the goalkeeper’s salary, while the small Catalan club would only cover 25% of his hefty €20 million annual wage.
Thus, Girona appears to be Barcelona’s last hope of offloading Ter Stegen. The club is less than an hour’s drive from the Catalan city and would offer him consistent playing time, guaranteeing his participation in the 2026 World Cup while allowing him to maintain his personal life as he desires.
The final decision rests with Ter Stegen, who still hopes to find a new club in the first few weeks of January and return to guarding the Camp Nou goal, replacing Juan García and Wojciech Szczęsny.
