The Royal Club had stumbled in their last two league matches, losing to Mallorca and drawing with Girona. In between, they were eliminated from the Champions League quarterfinals after a 6-4 aggregate defeat to Bayern Munich.

Real Madrid players booed at the Bernabeu

Recent results and Real Madrid looming prospect of a trophyless season cast a shadow over the attendance at the Santiago Bernabeu, which was noticeably lower than usual.

This was just the beginning, as Mundo Deportivo reported that fans at the club’s historic stadium booed the Real Madrid players as soon as they came out for their warm-up.

As the match kicked off, the first wave of anger was directed at Álvaro Carreras in the opening minutes, after a mistake that nearly led to a dangerous opportunity for Alavés. Despite the criticism he received, the attack ended without a goal.

With his first touch, Vinicius Junior was met with boos, and Kylian Mbappé fared no better, also receiving whistles, though far less than his Brazilian teammate.

The Spanish newspaper described the incident as a clear rebuke from Real Madrid fans to the two stars, holding them responsible for the Spanish club’s disastrous season on all fronts.

Goals from the Real Madrid vs. Alavés match in La Liga 2026

The match seemed within Real Madrid’s grasp against Alavés, who were only one point above the relegation zone. Kylian Mbappé gave Álvaro Arbeloa’s team the lead in the 30th minute with a deflected shot that found the back of the net.

In the 50th minute, Vinicius Junior unleashed another rocket of a shot from outside the penalty area to score Real Madrid’s second goal. He then looked towards the stands and apologized to the fans in a truly admirable gesture for the 25-year-old.

Moments before the final whistle, Toni Martinez scored a consolation goal for Alavés, but it wasn’t enough to snatch even a point from a wounded Real Madrid.

With this victory, Real Madrid temporarily reduces the gap with Barcelona to six points, pending the Catalan club’s match against Celta Vigo at the Spotify Camp Nou on Wednesday.
