Egypt woke up on Saturday to the tragic death of Modern Sport player, Ahmed Refaat, a few months after the difficult scene he experienced at the Alexandria International Stadium.
Refaat suffered a heart attack during his team’s match against Al-Ittihad of Alexandria last March, as a result of which he was transferred to the hospital and remained there for a month.
The 31-year-old appeared in good condition on MBC Masr on June 23, but he died on Saturday morning, July 6.
According to Dr. Ahmed Ashraf Issa, Director of the Cardiac Sports Center and one of the supervisors of Refaat’s treatment, the player died due to a sudden and complete cessation of the heart muscle with a breakdown and interruption in the electrical system that makes the heart work.
The doctor confirmed that Refaat’s condition was improving greatly, and within 45 days he would enter an advanced stage of rehabilitation.
Refaat watched the match between Portugal and France in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, but afterward he suffered from pain and was taken to the hospital and passed away.
It is noteworthy that Ahmed Refaat had a long and distinguished career in the Egyptian League, where he played for Zamalek, Enppi, Al-Masry, Al-Ittihad of Alexandria, Modern Sport, and Al-Wahda of the Emirates. He also has 5 international matches with the Egyptian national team.
