Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta couldn’t hide his disappointment after his team’s FA Cup exit at the hands of Championship side Southampton on Saturday.
The 2-1 quarter-final defeat, following their League Cup final loss to Manchester City, has suddenly reduced Arsenal’s quadruple hopes this season to a double.
“The result, and especially the way we conceded the two goals, was disappointing,” Arteta said after the Gunners’ 2-1 defeat.
The Spanish manager attributed his team’s loss to the poor weather, adding, “They are a very good team and are on a good run of form, and you have to congratulate them. You have to adapt to the wind, to injuries, and to difficult situations during the season.”
He continued, “Arsenal had some very good moments; they should have taken advantage of them and gone to Wembley, but we didn’t.”
“Now we have to show the true mettle we’re made of,” he concluded.
Arsenal still hold a nine-point lead over Manchester City in the Premier League (with Pep Guardiola’s side having a game in hand), and the Gunners are also set to face Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League quarter-finals.
