Chelsea Football Club has announced its biggest pre-tax loss in Premier League history, with a deficit of approximately £262 million for the 2024-25 season.
This surpasses the previous record held by Manchester City in 2011 (£197.5 million).
These losses come despite the club generating £490.9 million in revenue, which it described as its second-highest total revenue in its history.
The club maintains that it remains compliant with financial regulations, such as the Profitability and Sustainability Rules, which allow for losses of up to £105 million over three years. It clarified that the figures used to calculate compliance differ from the net pre-tax loss.
Sources told BBC Sport that the reported losses include fines, including a £10.75 million Premier League penalty related to payments made to player agents during Roman Abramovich’s ownership.
The budget also included write-offs for high-profile players such as Raheem Sterling, who was released, and Mihailo Modric, who is under investigation for failing a doping test.
However, Chelsea expects record revenues in the upcoming budget, with an additional £85 million from winning the Club World Cup and around £80 million from Champions League broadcasting rights.
The club also revealed that the women’s team recorded a loss of £17.1 million in the 2024-25 season, despite generating £21.3 million in revenue.
