Former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has opened the door to international management, confirming that his next career step could be leading a national team. The Spanish tactician expressed a desire to find a better balance between his professional and family life after years of high-pressure club football.
Xavi has been out of management since departing Barcelona in the summer of 2024, concluding a tenure that lasted nearly two and a half years.
Why Xavi Prefers a National Team Job
Speaking to the press, Xavi stated: “My next step could be coaching a national team; it suits me, and it is what I want.”
He explained his motivation, adding: “I have a family, and working with a club does not grant me enough time with them, especially since I have young children.”
The World Cup winner concluded: “I look forward to participating as a manager in the World Cup, the Euros, the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), or the Asian Cup.”
Xavi’s Career and Previous National Team Links
Over the past months, Xavi’s name has been linked with several international positions. Rumors initially connected him to the India national team, followed by negotiations with Qatar. Most recently, his name emerged after Walid Regragui’s dismissal as Morocco manager; however, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation ultimately chose to appoint local coach Mohamed Wahbi.
Xavi successfully led Barcelona to a La Liga title in the 2022-2023 season, alongside a Spanish Super Cup trophy, before leaving his post at the end of the following season. He began his managerial journey in 2019 with Qatari side Al-Sadd, where he achieved notable success by winning the Qatar Cup, the Emir Cup, and the Sheikh Jassim Cup, before making his return to Barcelona in November 2021.
