On Monday, Derby County officially announced the cessation of negotiations, despite the takeover bid receiving approval last week from the English Football League (EFL) and the Independent Football Regulator—the two most significant regulatory hurdles facing the deal.

Neither the club nor Al-Sheikh disclosed the agreed financial value. However, the deal was not a minor investment or commercial sponsorship; it aimed to purchase a stake that would grant Lion Sport control over Derby, replacing the current owners, Clowes Developments.

Why Did Turki Al-Sheikh Withdraw?

Derby County clarified that it received a notification from Lion Sport expressing their desire not to proceed with the purchase. The club confirmed it is no longer for sale and will continue to operate under the ownership of businessman and lifelong fan, David Clowes.

Al-Sheikh attributed his decision to the lengthy regulatory procedures. He explained that the approaching season and the start of official matches left insufficient time to prepare the team and the club according to his planned project.

While he respected the importance of the regulator’s checks, he felt that completing the deal without a proper preparation period would not be the right decision. He left the door slightly open for future communication, though Derby’s statement appeared more final in declaring their exit from the market. The team kicks off its Championship campaign against Charlton Athletic on Saturday.

Why Was Derby County Seeking an Investor?

David Clowes rescued the club from administration in July 2022 in a deal estimated at £55 million, bringing the team and Pride Park Stadium under a single ownership umbrella.

The club successfully restored stability and returned to the Championship. However, pushing for Premier League promotion requires greater financial resources than the cautious approach adopted by the current owner. The latest financial results revealed net liabilities of £44.9 million by the end of June 2025, largely linked to funds injected by the owner to finance day-to-day operations.

Consequently, Clowes entered negotiations with Al-Sheikh in May 2026, hoping to secure the necessary capital to upgrade the squad and facilities while avoiding the reckless spending that led to the club’s previous crisis.

Al-Sheikh’s Previous Football Ventures

Derby County would not have been Al-Sheikh’s first foray into club ownership. He was previously linked with Pyramids FC in Egypt before purchasing Spanish side UD Almería in 2019.

Under his ownership, Almería earned promotion to La Liga. He eventually sold his entire stake to a Saudi investment group in May 2025, redirecting most of his sporting activities toward boxing and organizing major events.

Derby County represented an attractive project thanks to its massive fanbase, stadium, and rich history as a founding member of the Football League, a two-time First Division champion, and a one-time FA Cup winner.
