Marc-André ter Stegen left the Barcelona squad in Saudi Arabia for the Spanish Super Cup and returned to Barcelona after sustaining an injury.
According to Mundo Deportivo, ter Stegen experienced discomfort in his knee, and the club decided to send him back to Barcelona immediately for further medical examinations.
Initially, Barcelona’s management is not worried about the injury, which appears minor, but they do not want to risk further injury and, consequently, are unable to loan him to another club in January.
The German international returned to Barcelona, where he will meet with the doctor who performed his knee surgery last year to assess his condition. In any case, he is now out of Hansi Flick’s plans for the Spanish Super Cup.
There is a near-agreement between Ter Stegen and Girona for him to join the promising Catalan club this winter until the end of the season. Barcelona’s management hopes to finalize the deal after the Super Cup, provided the 33-year-old’s injury proves to be minor.
In Ter Stegen’s absence, Szczesny will be Barcelona’s second-choice goalkeeper for the Super Cup, behind first-choice goalkeeper Juan García, who has kept a clean sheet throughout the past month.
