Salah scores in a Panenka style against South Africa

The Egyptian national team delivered a strong performance in the first half of their Africa Cup of Nations match against South Africa, capped by Mohamed Salah scoring the Pharaohs’ first goal.

Possession remained in Egypt’s hands until the referee awarded a somewhat controversial penalty to Hossam Hassan’s team.

While chasing a ball inside the penalty area, Mohamed Salah was struck in the face by defender Modiba. VAR confirmed the foul, leading the referee to ultimately award a penalty.

As usual, Mohamed Salah stepped up to take the penalty. Despite facing one of Africa’s best penalty-saving goalkeepers, the “Egyptian King” chipped the ball down the middle of the goal with a Panenka-style chip.

This is Salah’s second goal in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations for Egypt, putting him joint top scorer with Riyad Mahrez, Elias Achouri, and Nicholas Jackson.

This goal was Salah’s ninth overall in the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt, surpassing Ahmed Hassan and becoming the third all-time top scorer for the Pharaohs in the African competition.
