Spain captain Rodri has brushed aside speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid this summer, insisting his sole focus right now is leading his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Manchester City midfielder addressed the rumours during Spain’s media day at Las Rozas, delivering a measured but clear response.
Rodri Shuts Down Real Madrid Questions Ahead of World Cup
When asked directly about the possibility of joining Real Madrid, Rodri kept his answer brief and composed. “Right now I am focused on being a leader within the Spain squad — that is my path,” he said. He added that while he understands the noise and the rumours surrounding his future, he has no intention of wasting energy thinking about them. “We will see what happens after the World Cup,” he concluded.
The speculation has intensified following Pep Guardiola’s departure from Manchester City, which has raised questions about Rodri’s long-term future at the Etihad. His contract runs until the summer of 2027, and no renewal agreement has been reached so far.
Real Madrid are known to be in the market for a new central midfielder, and president Florentino Pérez is reportedly convinced that Rodri is the only player worth paying €100 million for. Presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme has even gone further, pledging to sign the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner if elected.
Spain’s Road to the 2026 World Cup
Before the tournament begins, Spain will face Iraq in a friendly this Thursday, followed by a second warm-up match against Peru on June 9. La Roja will then open their World Cup campaign against Cape Verde on Monday, June 15 — with Rodri expected to be at the heart of everything as captain and talisman for the defending European champions.
