Al Ahly stumbled into their first setback of the Egyptian Premier League season, held to a 1–1 draw by host side Arab Contractors at El Gabal El Akhdar Stadium on Wednesday evening, ending a perfect start that saw them win their opening three fixtures.
Al Ahly entered the match seeking to extend their winning streak, but were met with a disciplined defensive display by Sami Shoeman’s side. Arab Contractors successfully restricted space for Zizo, Achraf Bencharki, and Monsef Bakrar while dangerous on quick counter-attacks behind the visitors’ defense.
Arab Contractors capitalized on their solid first-half display by winning a penalty after Mohamed Hany fouled Omar Kamal Abdelwahed inside the box. Islam Jaber stepped up and converted in the 39th minute, slotting the ball into the bottom-left corner past Mohamed El Shenawy.
Al Ahly sought an immediate response before halftime, and Amr El Gazzar nearly leveled with a header off a precise cross from Zizo, but his effort missed the target, sending Arab Contractors into the break with a 1–0 lead.
The Red Giants improved significantly in the second half. Achraf Bencharki was tripped inside the penalty area to earn a spot-kick, which Zizo calmly converted in the 56th minute, continuing his strong attacking form since joining Al Ahly.
Head coach Hussein Ammouta introduced Imam Ashour and Ahmed Reda in place of Bencharki and Ali Mahmoud to intensify attacking pressure and hunt for a winner. However, the Arab Contractors defense held firm, ensuring the points were shared.
Pyramids fully capitalized on Al Ahly’s slip, securing a 1–0 victory over El Gouna to reach 12 points and claim sole possession of top spot in the league table. Zamalek moved into second place with 10 points, leading Al Ahly on goal difference as both sides sit level on points.
Al Ahly will look to return to winning ways when they host Abou Qir Fertilizers on Tuesday, September 15, in the fifth round of the Egyptian Premier League, ahead of a lengthy mid-season break prior to their anticipated clash against Zamalek.
