Marca reported that Real Madrid’s management is inclined to thank Luka Modric for his historic time at the Santiago Bernabéu and does not intend to renew his contract, which expires at the end of this season.
The Croatian international has a big goal at this stage: to stay with Real Madrid for another year, then participate in the 2026 World Cup with his country and retire after that.
However, all indications are that Modric will leave the club after the 2025 Club World Cup.
Last season, Modric’s contract renewal was also delayed. However, then-president Florentino Pérez set a May date to discuss the matter, and the player signed the extension. However, there has been no communication of any kind from any official with the 38-year-old to discuss the renewal.
Unless something new happens, Modric will face the same fate as Nacho Fernandez and Lucas Vázquez, receiving a fitting farewell and being released due to his advanced age.
Modric has not given up hope yet. He wants to renew and is willing to accept any terms of the new contract, including a significant salary cut. However, there has been no response from Perez’s administration so far.
According to Marca, some players have suggested that Modric contact new coach Xabi Alonso to resolve his situation. However, the Croatian has not yet done so, preferring to wait until the Spaniard is officially appointed.
It is worth noting that the newspaper also confirmed the chances of Real Madrid changing its mind and keeping Modric for another year, although they appear very slim.
