Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen has emerged as an option for Real Madrid as they plan for the long-term future of their goalkeeping department beyond Thibaut Courtois.
According to Sport Bild, the Dutchman is admired within the Spanish club, who are monitoring his development with Brighton and the Netherlands as they assess potential options for the years ahead.
At 24, Verbruggen combines relative youth with Premier League and international experience. His Brighton contract runs until 2028, making his situation particularly relevant to Madrid’s long-term planning.
The goalkeeper strengthened his credentials with an outstanding display in Brighton’s 1–0 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. He made seven saves and was named Player of the Match, helping his side secure a valuable away win.
Verbruggen now has six clean sheets from nine Premier League appearances this season. He played all 38 of Brighton’s league matches in the 2025–26 campaign, finishing with 10 clean sheets.
Madrid’s interest comes as Courtois approaches a contract extension until 2028, with his current deal running until summer 2027. That would give the club time to manage a gradual transition as the Belgian goalkeeper grows older.
Madrid also have Andriy Lunin, whose contract runs until 30 June 2030. The Ukrainian played an influential role in their 2023–24 Champions League triumph, meaning any move for another goalkeeper would also depend on an assessment of his future and role within the squad.
With Verbruggen’s contract due to expire around the same time as Courtois’ anticipated stay, summer 2028 could offer a suitable opportunity for a move. Madrid could also act earlier if Brighton decide to sell, although their interest currently remains at the monitoring and planning stage.
