Fulham FC has announced in an official statement the departure of manager Marco Silva after a highly successful five-year tenure with the London club.
Fulham owner Shahid Khan stated in an official release on Tuesday: “This is an inevitable change. Together with Marco, we formed a successful partnership for five years, but we have been preparing for this moment for some time.”
The Domino Effect: From Fulham to Benfica to Real Madrid
The departure of the 48-year-old tactician from Craven Cottage paves the way for him to take over at Benfica. Silva is set to succeed Jose Mourinho, who is widely expected to be announced as the new Real Madrid manager once Florentino Perez secures victory in the Spanish club’s presidential elections this coming Sunday.
Silva has established himself as one of the finest managers in English football over recent years. He successfully guided Fulham back to the Premier League and kept them comfortably clear of any relegation battles throughout their four seasons in the top flight.
Marco Silva’s Fulham Stats and Legacy
Since taking charge in 2021 until the end of the recent season, Silva managed 229 matches for Fulham, securing 104 wins, 42 draws, and suffering 83 defeats.
Over the past two years, the Portuguese coach was heavily linked with several top-tier Premier League clubs, including Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. However, he consistently chose to remain with Fulham before ultimately deciding to bring this chapter to a close.
This upcoming stint with Benfica will mark Marco Silva’s third managerial job in Portugal, following his early career at Estoril and a successful spell with Sporting CP in 2014.
