Newcastle United has successfully wrapped up a record-breaking deal after reaching a full agreement with Reims to sign promising young goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen.
Spanish media outlets had previously revealed that Real Madrid was tracking Jaouen, viewing the 20-year-old prodigy as the long-term successor to Thibaut Courtois at the Santiago Bernabéu. However, Los Blancos never formalised their interest, allowing Newcastle to sweep in with a convincing project that promises the Frenchman the number-one spot in the Premier League.
According to British reports, Jaouen is scheduled to arrive in Tyneside within the coming hours. He will undergo his medical examinations on Monday before Newcastle officially announces the blockbuster signing.
Jaouen Becomes Most Expensive Transfer in French Ligue 2 History
The transfer is historic by all metrics. Newcastle will shell out €28.5 million to Reims, making Jaouen the most expensive departure in the history of the French Ligue 2.
This blockbuster sale continues a spectacular year of transfer business for Reims. The French club has generated massive revenue over the last year, notably selling Valentin Atangana to Saudi side Al-Ahli for €25 million last June, and offloading Patrick Sabatier to Paris FC for the exact same amount in January.
While Jaouen is locked in for a Premier League chapter with Newcastle, a future move to Real Madrid remains a realistic option down the line, though his market value is expected to skyrocket once he establishes himself in England.
