Müller Chooses His New MLS Club

Thomas Müller has decided which MLS club he will join after his legendary career with Bayern Munich ends.

Müller was expected to announce his retirement from football after the decision not to renew his contract with Bayern Munich at the end of last season, but he opted for a new experience outside of Europe and moved to the United States.

Müller received several significant offers, most notably from Los Angeles FC, but ultimately decided to join the Canadian team Vancouver Whitecaps of MLS.

According to Bild, Vancouver will have to pay $400,000 to Cincinnati, which is the “spotting rights” for the American club that first tried to sign Müller.

American clubs draw up a list of players they want to sign during transfer windows, which are then approved by the MLS.

If another club seeks to acquire the player’s services, they are obligated to pay a transfer fee for the other club’s “discovery rights.” This avoids competition between clubs over signing players, and also places a cap on the amount paid in deals.

Müller will sign his transfer contract with Vancouver in early August, joining the Canadian club for one year. His salary there has not been disclosed.
