Manchester United have reached an agreement with Michael Carrick to take over as first-team manager, replacing the sacked Ruben Amorim, on a contract that runs until the end of the current season.
Amorim was dismissed from his position at Manchester United following disagreements with the board. He remains the manager with the lowest win percentage in the Red Devils’ recent history, at just 30%.
Recognizing that hiring a high-profile manager now is virtually impossible, United’s management decided to appoint an interim manager familiar with the inner workings of Old Trafford and wait until next summer to appoint Amorim’s permanent successor.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was a strong candidate for the position, having previously managed the club in 2019. However, according to British media, he failed to convince the board as much as Michael Carrick’s approach and ideas.
The Englishman previously served as an assistant to both José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He also took charge of the Red Devils for three matches in 2021 following the Norwegian’s dismissal, before embarking on a career outside his historic club, managing Middlesbrough from 2022 until last June.
Carrick’s first challenge in his new role will be a fiery one, as he faces Manchester City at Old Trafford next Saturday in the Premier League.
United currently sit seventh in the Premier League table with 32 points and have been eliminated from both the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup, leaving Carrick’s primary objective for the foreseeable future: securing a Champions League spot for his team.
