Former Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa has reportedly offered his services to Bayer Leverkusen to take over the German club next season. However, his managerial application was swiftly rejected by the club’s board.
Leverkusen are currently on the verge of sacking their Danish manager, Kasper Hjulmand. Yet, all their extensive efforts to secure a high-profile replacement have ended in failure so far.
The Bundesliga outfit previously attempted to sign Andoni Iraola, who ultimately chose to join Liverpool, and faced a similar setback with Filipe Luis, who is set to take over at Monaco.
According to German outlet Bild, Arbeloa’s name was proposed to Bayer Leverkusen via his agent. Despite their vacancy, Simon Rolfes’ management did not hesitate to decline the offer.
The Leverkusen hierarchy believes that Arbeloa’s recent tenure at Real Madrid over the past few months proves he is still far from ready to lead a first-team squad in any of Europe’s top five leagues.
On the other hand, Arbeloa is actively searching for a new opportunity to revive his coaching career. His time at Real Madrid was marred by failure across all competitions, alongside numerous tactical and internal disputes within the dressing room. These severe dressing room crises ultimately forced the Madrid board to sack him and re-appoint Jose Mourinho.
Leverkusen initially seemed like the perfect destination for Arbeloa. In recent years, the club has shown a strong preference for Spanish managers, heavily inspired by the immense success of Xabi Alonso. However, for now, this golden door has been completely shut in Arbeloa’s face.
