Lamine Yamal has transformed the ongoing rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid into a personal duel with Kylian Mbappé, positioning both players at the pinnacle of world football while arguing that his title haul gives him the clear advantage over the French star.
Speaking to Movistar, the 19-year-old reiterated his claim to the Ballon d’Or, framed Mbappé as his sole primary competitor, and tied their individual battle directly to the historic intensity of El Clásico.
Direct Competition and Title Advantage
“Mbappé plays for Real Madrid and I play for Barcelona, so there is direct competition between us, and I have outperformed him in terms of trophies,” Yamal stated. “I believe Mbappé and I are the two best players in the world, and this year I feel I deserve to win the Ballon d’Or.”
He added: “Even if England had won the World Cup, I would still say that Mbappé and I are the best players in the world. The Ballon d’Or is not strictly about who wins trophies; it is awarded to the best overall player—those are two different concepts.”
Yamal’s case over Mbappé centers on a stellar campaign where he secured the La Liga title with Barcelona, earned the La Liga Player of the Season award, and led Spain to victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, building on his prior UEFA Euro 2024 triumph.
The Barcelona winger finished the 2025–2026 season with 24 goals in 45 appearances. While Mbappé posted exceptional individual goalscoring figures for Real Madrid and France, he lacked the major team silverware to strengthen his stance against his Spanish counterpart. Yamal also holds the upper hand in high-stakes international encounters, with Spain defeating France in the semifinals of both Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup.
Looking Ahead to El Clásico and Praising Messi
Addressing the upcoming clash between the Spanish giants, Yamal expressed eager anticipation: “I really want to face Real Madrid in El Clásico. If you come through La Masia, you know that El Clásico feels like a war.”
Yamal concluded by reflecting on Lionel Messi’s performances: “Messi was the best player at the World Cup considering everything he represents and delivered. Even though everyone knows Messi is the greatest player in history, no one expected him to produce such a mind-blowing World Cup performance.”
While Yamal praised his former club legend, the official FIFA World Cup Golden Ball was awarded to Rodri, with Messi leading Argentina to the final against Spain.
