The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced on Monday evening the receipt of the decisions and initiated steps to obtain the detailed grounds of the ruling to evaluate an appeal, while the sanctions reignited debate over the nature of the infractions under investigation and the timing of the questioned statements.

The decisions included a three-match suspension for both Hossam and Ibrahim Hassan, alongside a five-match ban for Mostafa Zizo. The official announcement disclosed only the lengths of the bans and the request for the written grounds, without detailing the specific violations established against each party or specifying the exact matches in which the suspensions will be served.

The background of the crisis traces back to the match between Egypt and Argentina on July 7 during the World Cup Round of 16, which ended in a 3-2 defeat for the Pharaohs after they had taken a 2-0 lead. The fixture witnessed Egyptian protests over an annulled goal by Zizo and other refereeing decisions, before post-match criticisms escalated into accusations of favoritism toward the Argentine team and altering the outcome of the contest.

However, according to reports published in August citing FIFA correspondence, the investigation file was not limited to match-related protests. Al-Shorouk reported that the letter concerning Hossam Hassan addressed his pre- and post-match statements, including his expressions of support for Palestine during the pre-match press conference, which fell under suspicion of using a sporting event to convey non-sporting positions, alongside potential breaches related to conduct and the reputation of the game.

The inquiry also encompassed Hossam Hassan’s post-elimination statements accusing Argentina of receiving preferential treatment for marketing reasons, as well as for being the defending champions and featuring Lionel Messi, according to the letter published by Cairo 24. Following the match, the manager stated: “I will not watch any other match in the World Cup,” in protest against what he perceived as a lack of fairness, linking the result to both pitch events and preceding factors.

Regarding Ibrahim Hassan, UAE newspaper Al Bayan—which stated it reviewed the three letters—reported that his file addressed post-match statements accusing officials of guaranteeing an Argentine victory, alongside messages of support for Palestine. In Zizo’s case, the file contained allegations of questioning the referee’s integrity and intentional harm to Egypt, after the player commented: “The tournament is directed… congratulations to Argentina on the World Cup.” An additional potential infraction of unsporting behavior toward a match official was also attributed to him.

The EFA had previously announced on August 23 the submission of legal responses and supporting documents for the trio a day before the deadline, reiterating its backing for the technical staff and players. The current step involves requesting the full written grounds to examine the position ahead of lodging an appeal, as the statement contained no announcement of an active appeal submission or a stay of execution for the sanctions.
