In a meeting with the Egyptian League Association, Egyptian Premier League clubs endorsed a decision to cancel relegation this season, while increasing the number of teams participating in next season’s edition to 21.
Two teams were supposed to be relegated from the Premier League to the Professional League, with three teams being promoted. However, the new decision cancels relegation with the clubs being promoted as planned, bringing the total number of teams participating in next season’s Egyptian League to 21.
According to Egyptian media, next season’s Egyptian League will have a similar format to this season’s league, with a single round-robin format, followed by clubs being divided into two groups to determine the champions and relegated teams.
However, the difference is that the first group consists of the top seven teams in the standings after the first round, while the remaining 14 teams will form a second group to determine the relegation teams (this season, there will be nine teams in each group).
Ultimately, four clubs will be relegated to the Premier League, while three others will qualify. Starting with the 2026-27 season, the Egyptian Premier League will feature 20 teams and return to its normal two-round format.
Ismaily and Ghazl El Mahalla will benefit the most from this decision, as they are at the bottom of the relegation group with two rounds remaining, and will thus remain among the top teams.
