Algerian media outlets report that the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) is facing a major financial and legal crisis. This follows former manager Vladimir Petković’s outright refusal to negotiate a payout settlement after his recent dismissal.
The FAF decided to sack the Swiss tactician following Algeria’s disappointing round of 32 exit from the 2026 World Cup, where they suffered a 2-0 defeat against Switzerland. The tournament was marred by underwhelming performances and relentless criticism of the former Lazio manager’s tactical choices.
Vladimir Petković Contract and Payout Dilemma
The dismissal comes less than a month after Petković renewed his contract until the summer of 2028. Consequently, the Algerian Football Federation is legally obligated to pay the full value of the remaining contract, meaning they must secure a staggering €5 million to resolve the dispute.
The financial burden is immense. Petković has made it clear that he will not accept a reduced payout or engage in compromise negotiations. The 63-year-old coach has threatened to take the matter directly to FIFA, where sports lawyers believe he would have a 100% guaranteed winning case.

While internal discussions are underway within the FAF to find an alternative solution, Petković remains firm on his demands for immediate payment.
Meanwhile, Algeria is urgently searching for a new national team coach, with less than a year to go before the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Current Nigeria manager Eric Chelle remains the FAF’s top target. Additionally, the idea of appointing a local manager—such as former national team star Antar Yahia—has been heavily discussed, mirroring the recent successes of Egypt and Morocco with homegrown coaches.
