Cadena SER reports that Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen has finally agreed to a move to a new club during the current winter transfer window.
Ter Stegen clung to a glimmer of hope of returning to Barcelona’s goal after recovering from injury. However, the form of Juan García and Hansi Flick’s preference for Wojciech Szczęsny as a backup make the German’s task almost impossible for the remainder of the season.
According to the latest report, Girona coach Míchel contacted Ter Stegen by phone in recent hours to convince him to join the Catalan club on loan until the end of the season.
The call between the two parties went perfectly, to the point that Ter Stegen not only agreed to join Girona but is also very enthusiastic about taking this step in his career.
With Girona, Ter Stegen is guaranteed consistent playing time until the end of the season. The promising club recently lost their goalkeeper, Dominik Livakovic, and has been searching for a replacement for the Croatian for a month.
It is said that the 33-year-old Ter Stegen is even open to a significant pay cut to secure the move to Girona, which allows him to continue living in Barcelona as he and his family desire.
If things go as planned, the German goalkeeper could finalize his transfer to Girona as soon as Barcelona returns to Spain after the Spanish Super Cup.
It’s worth noting that Julian Nagelsmann, the German national team coach, has stated clearly that Ter Stegen needs consistent playing time to earn a place in the German squad for the 2026 World Cup. He emphasized that the type of club the goalkeeper joins is less important than maintaining his match fitness for the next six months.
