In the 13th minute of the match, played at Ismaily Stadium, Mohamed Helal sent in a cross from a free kick on Modern’s left flank. In a truly bizarre turn of events, Ismaily defender Mohamed Ammar inadvertently headed the ball into his own net.

This was the 20th own goal in the Egyptian Premier League this season.

As Modern took the lead and Ismaily tried to get back into the game, coach Khaled Galal suffered two blows. The first came in the final minutes of the first half when Mostafa Khatari sustained a serious injury.

Then, in the second half, specifically in the 59th minute, Khaled El-Nabrisi received a straight red card, further complicating the home side’s efforts to equalize.

In the end, Ismaily suffered another defeat, leaving the “Dervishes” stuck on 14 points at the bottom of the table, a full 13 points adrift of safety in the Egyptian Premier League.

Ismaily is now pinning its hopes on the merger of grassroots clubs with company-owned clubs as a last resort to escape relegation, which now seems more imminent than ever.
