Jeers and whistles erupted as soon as Neuer stepped onto the pitch for pre-match warm-ups and persisted with every touch he made during the match, accompanied by chants underlining the enduring resentment felt by a section of his former club’s fanbase.
Supporters chanted, “We are Schalke and you are not,” before escalating to abusive language directed at his family. The reaction prompted Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, to step in and condemn the behavior.
Eberl stated that Schalke fans should instead take pride in the fact that their academy produced a player who reached the absolute pinnacle of world football, becoming a World Cup champion and one of the greatest goalkeepers in history. He emphasized that while rival opposition to Bayern is fully understandable, personal insults cross the line.
Neuer chose to respond to the atmosphere with humor, remarking with a smile that he interpreted every whistle as a “compliment” and that the reception merely reflected “love.” He added that returning to Gelsenkirchen remains an emotional and special occasion for him, especially with family members present in the stands.
Born in Gelsenkirchen, Neuer spent nearly 20 years at Schalke progression from the youth academy to the first team before his high-profile transfer to Bayern Munich in 2011. The move was viewed as a betrayal by a section of Royal Blues supporters, given his deep-rooted personal connection to the club and its fanbase.
Prior to the match, German legend Lothar Matthäus and Schalke icon Olaf Thon had publicly called on the home crowd to grant the goalkeeper a respectful reception fitting his career achievements, particularly as the 40-year-old Neuer indicated that this match likely represents his final visit to the Veltins-Arena as an active player.
