Barcelona had previously submitted an official bid worth €100 million to secure Álvarez’s services. However, Atlético Madrid refused to even enter negotiations. Despite this, the Catalan club maintained that the deal was still alive, especially given the player’s publicly stated desire to join manager Hansi Flick’s squad at the Camp Nou.

Gil Marín’s Strong Message to Joan Laporta

In a series of hard-hitting press statements aimed directly at Barcelona’s board, Gil Marín stated:

“My position is completely clear, and so is the club’s position. We have officially informed the player, his representatives, and the president of Barcelona about this matter.”

The Los Rojiblancos CEO firmly added:

“I have absolutely no doubt that Atlético Madrid is the ideal place in the world for Julián, and that he is the perfect centerpiece forward for Atlético Madrid. Our desire is clear, which is to keep him in our ranks.”

“Our Refusal is Limitless” — Atlético Shuts Down the Deal

Responding directly to Barcelona President Joan Laporta’s recent comments that their financial offer would not remain valid forever, Gil Marín delivered a stinging retort:

“I recently heard the Barcelona president say that the offer he presented to Atlético Madrid is not limitless. My only response to him is that our refusal is what is limitless.”

He concluded by completely blocking any potential path for the transfer:

“We do not want to transfer or sell the player. We did not accept a €100 million offer, we will not accept a €150 million offer, and we would not even agree if the bid reached €200 million.”

Following these powerful statements, Barcelona’s management will likely be forced to pivot to alternative options for the striker position. Laporta had previously confirmed that Sporting Director Deco already has a shortlist of targets ready to fill the void left by Robert Lewandowski’s departure from the Catalan club.
