Kylian Mbappé, the star of the France national team, scored his 18th World Cup goal after netting a brace against Sweden during their 2026 World Cup Round of 32 clash.
For his first goal, Mbappé burst into the penalty box before unleashing an unstoppable right-footed strike. With this finish, he officially claimed sole possession of second place in the all-time World Cup top scorers list, surpassing Germany’s Miroslav Klose and sitting just one goal behind the leader, Lionel Messi.
In the second half, the Real Madrid forward struck again to secure France’s third goal, brilliantly finding the back of the net after receiving a sublime pass from Michael Olise.
A Historic Knockout Milestone
Simultaneously, Mbappé established a legendary milestone that reflects his clinical nature and importance to Les Bleus. He has now scored 10 goals in World Cup knockout matches across three tournaments—a tally no other player in football history has ever achieved for any national team.
Furthermore, Mbappé became only the third Real Madrid player in history to score 5 or more goals in a single World Cup edition, joining the elite company of Emilio Butragueño (1986) and Davor Šuker (1998).
On a national level, he is the first French player ever to score 5 or more goals in two different World Cup editions.
Following this performance, Mbappé now shares the top spot in the 2026 World Cup goalscoring charts with Lionel Messi, with both icons sitting on 6 goals, just one ahead of Erling Haaland.
