Cody Gakpo has expressed his desire to leave Liverpool and move to Tottenham during the current summer transfer window, after manager Roberto De Zerbi’s project offered him a chance to start a new chapter in the Premier League.
Dutch reports revealed that Gakpo has reached a preliminary agreement with Tottenham regarding personal terms following a conversation with De Zerbi. However, completing the deal remains contingent on Liverpool agreeing to sell him.
Tottenham is preparing to submit a bid worth around £60 million, equivalent to nearly €70 million. Meanwhile, some reports suggest that Liverpool might demand a higher fee given the length of the player’s contract and his Premier League experience.
Initially, the Reds are not looking to sell the Dutch forward, especially since he renewed his contract in August 2025 and is tied to the club until the summer of 2030. However, the board’s stance could change if a substantial offer arrives and a suitable replacement is signed before allowing him to leave.
Liverpool is working on signing Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain, and they also have the young winger Rio Ngumoha. However, manager Andoni Iraola does not want to lose one of his most experienced attackers without securing a replacement first, which requires a significant financial return from the Dutch star’s sale.
De Zerbi believes Gakpo’s ability to play as a left winger or a traditional striker offers him multiple solutions, especially given Dominic Solanke’s recurring injuries and Richarlison’s fluctuating form. Therefore, the Dutchman has become one of Tottenham’s main attacking targets.
If the deal is completed, Gakpo will become the second player to move from Liverpool to Tottenham this summer, following Andy Robertson, who joined on a free transfer after his contract at Anfield expired.
Tottenham is already experiencing a historic summer transfer window, having signed Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Martin Dubravka, Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes, and Sandro Tonali.
Spurs have spent around £237 million on their new signings, surpassing the club’s previous record in a single window, after paying £85 million to sign Fernandes and up to £100 million for Tonali.
Purchasing Gakpo for £60 million would bring Tottenham’s spending close to the £300 million mark, sending a clear message that the board is not merely satisfied with saving the team from its previous relegation battle, but wants to build a project capable of returning to the Champions League and competing for titles.
Gakpo joined Liverpool in January 2023 from PSV Eindhoven for around €44 million. He has played approximately 179 matches for the team, scoring 50 goals, becoming the second Dutch player to reach this milestone for the Reds after Dirk Kuyt.
The 27-year-old did not have his best season last year, scoring 9 goals and providing 6 assists in 52 matches, compared to the 18 goals and 7 assists he recorded during Liverpool’s Premier League title-winning season.
However, Gakpo regained some of his brilliance during the 2026 World Cup, scoring three goals and providing one assist for the Netherlands before the Dutch team was eliminated by Morocco in the Round of 32.
