Just as Zamalek SC fans were celebrating a crucial 1-0 victory over Smouha—edging them closer to their 15th Egyptian Premier League title—the club received grim news from Zurich. FIFA has officially issued a transfer ban against the “White Knights” for three consecutive registration periods.
The Yanick Ferrera Dispute: Case Number 16
According to Egyptian media reports, the latest sanction stems from unpaid dues to former Belgian coach Yanick Ferrera. Following his dismissal last October, Ferrera filed a complaint with FIFA regarding his contract’s termination compensation. The ruling mandates Zamalek to pay $400,000 before the end of May to resolve the case and secure their CAF license for continental competitions next season.
A Growing Financial Crisis: 16 Pending Cases
The “White Knights” are currently battling a legal storm, with 16 active cases at FIFA totaling over $4 million in liabilities. Notable debts include:
-
$70,000: Unpaid wages for Jose Gomes’ former assistants.
-
$133,000: Dues to former manager Christian Gross.
-
$505,000: Outstanding payments for Ferjani Sassi.
-
€200,000: First installment for Chico Banza (Estrela da Amadora).
-
€170,000: Installment for Oday Dabbagh (Charleroi).
-
Other debts: Unpaid installments for Juan Bezerra, Mahmoud Bentayg (Saint-Étienne), and Ahmed Jafali.
The Confederation Cup: A $4 Million Lifeline
Zamalek’s management is pinning its hopes on the CAF Confederation Cup 2025. Winning the title would grant the club a $4 million prize, sufficient to settle most of the outstanding debts and lift the transfer ban.
Zamalek SC will face Algeria’s USM Alger in the first leg of the final this Saturday at the 5 July Stadium, followed by the decisive second leg at Cairo International Stadium on May 16th.
