There is a division within Real Madrid regarding who will coach the team next season, amidst speculation that José Mourinho will return for a second stint at the Santiago Bernabéu.
The Athletic has confirmed that Mourinho is Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez’s preferred choice, and that negotiations will take place in early May to finalize his signing.
However, AS reports a significant disagreement behind the scenes between Pérez and CEO José Ángel Sánchez, who strongly opposes the idea of appointing “The Special One” and doesn’t see him as the right person to bring Real Madrid back to winning ways.
For the “shadow man,” keeping Álvaro Arbeloa or signing another option like Jürgen Klopp seems more logical than bringing back Mourinho, who has failed in most of his recent experiences and, in his view, isn’t the best person to restore discipline to the dressing room.
In reality, Ángel Sánchez’s opinion will be merely advisory. According to another report from El Mundo, Pérez will have sole authority to decide on Real Madrid’s new coach.
Sánchez was the one who opposed the signing of Xabi Alonso last year, despite Pérez’s reservations about the choice. He also urged Pérez to keep Alonso until the Spanish Super Cup, even though the president wanted to dismiss him in December after the loss to Celta Vigo.
Pérez was also unconvinced by the appointment of Arbeloa, which Sánchez insisted upon. Therefore, he decided that no one would share the power to appoint the new coach, and consequently, the CEO’s opinion will be disregarded, no matter how strongly he opposes the appointment of Mourinho.
