British media outlets have reported that Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique has rejected the idea of taking over as Manchester United manager permanently starting next season.
Michael Carrick is currently managing the Red Devils on an interim basis until the end of the season, and Enrique was considered a potential option by United’s board following his considerable success with Paris Saint-Germain in recent years.
Enrique Prefers to Stay with PSG
According to recent reports, Luis Enrique prefers to remain with Paris Saint-Germain and does not want to move to the English Premier League at this time.
The Spanish coach has received several offers from English clubs recently, the latest being from Manchester United, but he is not interested in taking on the role. His priority is to remain at the Parc des Princes, perhaps for an extended period.
Enrique’s contract with PSG runs until the summer of 2027, and in recent weeks, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has opened communication channels with him to encourage him to stay in the French capital for as long as possible.
Paris Saint-Germain Offers Enrique a “Lifetime” Contract
Enrique currently earns €1.1 million per month, and PSG’s management is prepared to double this salary to convince him to renew, making him the highest-paid coach in the world.
There is widespread satisfaction with Enrique’s performance with the French giants over the past three years, and how he succeeded in achieving the club’s biggest dream: winning their first Champions League title.
Michael Carrick to Remain as Manchester United Manager
In the same vein, British media outlets indicate that the most likely outcome at Old Trafford is for Michael Carrick to remain in his position and receive a new long-term contract with Manchester United.
Carrick has successfully reunited his team, and under his leadership, United has achieved its first winning streak in a long time, propelling them back into the top four of the Premier League and bringing them closer to a return to the Champions League.
The manager also enjoys immense trust and high regard from the Manchester United players, some of whom are said to have already approached the board to keep the Englishman in his position after he brought out the best form the team has had in the last five years or so.
Bruno Fernandes sets two conditions for renewing his contract with Manchester United
Carrick took over after the departure of Ruben Amorim last January and has led the team to seven wins out of ten matches, suffering only one defeat. Had he arrived earlier, he might have made his team contenders for the Premier League title.
Manchester United’s options are limited beyond Carrick
The current state of the managerial market shows that the options available to Manchester United are limited, and all carry the same risks as keeping Carrick.
Enrique was the board’s first choice, but now seems impossible. Thomas Tuchel has renewed his contract with the England national team until Euro 2028, and it is unlikely that Julian Nagelsmann would agree to leave the German national team after the upcoming World Cup to join the prestigious club.
Meanwhile, Carlo Ancelotti has announced his retirement from club management and is set to continue with the Brazilian national team until the 2030 World Cup, so all of United’s hopes now seem unattainable.
Experiences like those of Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola, and others of a similar ilk worry fans and even some officials about a repeat of the Erik ten Hag era. Therefore, the scales are tipping heavily in favor of keeping Carrick, as he is practically the least risky option.
