Real Madrid Clinches Derby Victory and Continues Chase of Barcelona

Real Madrid enters the international break buoyed by a hard-fought victory, having withstood Atlético Madrid’s attacks to secure a crucial win in the thrilling Madrid derby.

Álvaro Arbeloa’s side had several clear-cut chances in the first half-hour, with Juan Musso denying Dani Carvajal and Fede Valverde’s shot rebounding off the post.

Despite the intense pressure Atlético faced, it was they who opened the scoring. Matteo Ruggeri delivered a pinpoint cross that Giuliano Simeone cleverly flicked on to Ademola Lookman, who made no mistake in his debut in this historic encounter.

Atlético largely neutralized Real Madrid’s attacking threat in the first half, but just seven minutes into the second half, the home side equalized. David Hanco fouled Brahim Díaz inside the penalty area, giving Vinicius Junior the opportunity to convert from the spot.

Just minutes later, Fede Valverde added a second goal to make it 2-1, after José María Giménez (who had come on as a substitute for Robin Le Normand) gifted the Uruguayan international the ball, who continued to showcase his scoring prowess.

But Real Madrid’s lead didn’t last long, as Atlético responded spectacularly when Nahuel Molina unleashed a rocket into the top corner of Andriy Lunin’s net.

Real Madrid refused to give up, and in the 72nd minute, they regained the lead. Trent Alexander-Arnold passed the ball to Vinicius Junior, who cut in from the left before curling a shot into the far corner for his second goal of the evening.

This goal secured the victory for the home side, despite a tense finale that saw Valverde sent off for kicking Atlético substitute Álex Baena.

With this result, Real Madrid reduces the gap with Barcelona to four points in the La Liga title race before the final round of matches. Arbeloa’s team is still in contention, waiting for their rival to stumble in the remaining nine rounds.
