Barcelona responded to Real Madrid’s victory over Celta Vigo on Friday with a hard-fought and important 1-0 win at San Mamés against Athletic Bilbao.
With Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Newcastle United in mind, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick opted to leave Pedri, Fermín López, and Rafinha on the bench. As expected, this resulted in a noticeable drop in performance, with the Catalans failing to make a decisive impact in the first half.
The introduction of Pedri in the second half provided a much-needed boost for Barcelona, and it proved to be the turning point. The midfielder relieved pressure in the center circle before threading a pass to Lamine Yamal, who cut inside and unleashed a shot that found the back of the net after hitting the far post.
Athletic Bilbao then intensified their pressure in search of an equalizer, but they were met by the outstanding performance of Barcelona goalkeeper Juan García, who made three crucial saves throughout the 90 minutes to ensure his team kept another clean sheet.
The pressure was immense on Barcelona to respond after Real Madrid’s dramatic victory at Celta Vigo 24 hours earlier, and they managed to do so, albeit with some difficulty, thus extending their lead to four points in the La Liga title race.
