Former Spain coach Roberto Moreno is believed to have been dismissed from his last coaching post after his excessive reliance on the AI program ChatGBT led him to “ignore common sense.”
The 48-year-old took charge of Russian club Sochi in 2023, but last season saw a shift in his tactics within the technical area due to his use of the program.
Former club sporting director Andrei Orlov revealed to the media outlet SportsRussia one of the strangest incidents that occurred during an away match against Khabarovsk last March. Orlov claimed that Moreno devised a travel and training program for his players with the help of ChatGBT, and failed to adjust it even when the program advised him that the team should stay awake for 28 consecutive hours!
Orlov went on to reveal that Moreno also used the technology to choose between three potential strikers during the 2024-25 summer transfer window. After sharing season data, the program decided that the club would benefit most from signing Artur Shoshchenshev. The Kazakh striker subsequently failed to score in 10 matches before being sold the following summer.
Moreno denied the allegations, stating, “I have never used ChatGBT or any other artificial intelligence program to prepare for matches, determine lineups, or select players.”
Prior to his time at Sochi, Moreno coached Granada and Monaco, and briefly managed the Spanish national team for several months following Luis Enrique’s resignation after the death of his daughter from illness in 2019.
