José Mourinho has entered the list of candidates to permanently coach Real Madrid, succeeding Xabi Alonso, according to journalist Alfredo Relaño of AS.
Álvaro Arbeloa has been appointed as the Merengues’ coach, but his tenure remains uncertain. Some reports suggest he will stay until the summer of 2027, while others indicate he will leave at the end of the season.
It’s no secret that Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez is exploring options to replace Alonso next summer, with Jürgen Klopp being his top choice. However, the German is reluctant to return to coaching anytime soon.
Relaño stated that Pérez is considering Mourinho, especially since the Special One’s time at Benfica is set to end at the conclusion of the current season.
Relaño explained his choice of Mourinho specifically, saying, “Mourinho was the only coach Florentino was completely satisfied with. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he ended up returning to Real Madrid.”
Real Madrid owes a debt of gratitude to Mourinho for building the team that dominated under Carlo Ancelotti and later Zinedine Zidane.
The Special One coached Real Madrid from 2010 until his departure in 2013. During that time, he won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup, while also leading the club back to the later stages of the Champions League after years of being eliminated in the Round of 16.
