Michael Carrick is closer than ever to taking over as interim manager of Manchester United until the end of the current season, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Following the sacking of Ruben Amorim, United appointed Darren Fletcher on an interim basis until a permanent manager is found to complete the season, with the club then set to appoint a permanent manager next summer.
Since then, only two names have been considered by the United board: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick.
Solskjaer proved his ability to turn things around when he took over temporarily from Jose Mourinho in 2019 and delivered a near-perfect season. Carrick is considered one of the most promising managers in England and previously managed United for three matches after Solskjaer’s departure in 2021, winning two of them.
According to Romano, negotiations between Carrick and United have reached a relatively advanced stage, and current indications suggest he is favored by the Red Devils’ management over Solskjaer, making him the frontrunner to succeed Amorim.
Carrick has reportedly held “very positive” talks with United’s management, while Solskjaer’s discussions with officials have not been as positive, particularly regarding playing style and tactical ideas.
Carrick’s appointment is expected to be officially announced within the next 48 hours, allowing him to immediately lead the English team in their match against Manchester City next Saturday.
It’s worth noting that Carrick previously served as an assistant to both Mourinho and Solskjaer at United, then as interim manager. In 2022, he took over as manager of Middlesbrough until his departure last June.
