FC Barcelona announced in an official statement that Andreas Christensen has suffered a partial tear of his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which will keep him out of action for an extended period.
The statement explained that the Danish international was injured during Barcelona’s training session on Saturday, after an unfortunate twist to his knee that ultimately resulted in a partial tear of the ACL in his left knee.
Barcelona did not specify the duration of Christensen’s absence, only indicating that the player will undergo conservative treatment and will not require surgery.
According to Spanish newspaper reports, it is likely that Christensen will be sidelined for at least four months, representing a significant blow to the center-back position given the limited options currently available to coach Hansi Flick.
If the 29-year-old is indeed out for this period, Barcelona could register a new player in his place at 90% of his salary.
Christensen has suffered numerous injuries since joining Barcelona from Chelsea in the summer of 2021, and missed most of last season due to an Achilles tendon injury.
This season, Christensen has only made 15 appearances, mostly as a substitute, totaling 515 minutes, and has scored one goal, against Guadalajara in the Copa del Rey round of 32.
