Mohamed Salah made some fiery statements after being benched for the third consecutive match for Liverpool, against Leeds United on Saturday.
After being the Reds’ star player last season, Salah has experienced a clear decline in form, and then manager Arne Slott decided to sacrifice him, not giving him a single minute in the last three Premier League matches.
Following the 3-3 draw with Leeds, Salah spoke for the first time about what is happening, saying, “The way I see it is that you are throwing me under the bus (sacrificing me). I have become the team’s problem now.”
He added, “This is unacceptable to me, honestly. I don’t know why this is happening to me. I don’t think I am the problem here at Liverpool. Any other club is supposed to protect its players, not what is happening to me.”
Regarding his relationship with Slott, Salah said, “I had a very good relationship with him, but suddenly there is no relationship between us! I don’t know why.”
He concluded, “It seems that someone wants me out of Liverpool.” The club made me a lot of promises in the summer, and none of them have been kept. So I can say they’re keeping those promises somewhere else.
He continued, “I can’t believe what’s happening. I’m very disappointed. I’ve given so much to this club, and everyone can see that over the years, especially last season. To be on the bench, I don’t know why. I feel like the club is putting the pressure on me. That’s how I feel.”
Regarding his future and the possibility of leaving in January, he concluded, “We’ll see what happens. I’ll play the next game (against Brighton) at Anfield, and I’ll enjoy it because I don’t really know if I’ll play or not. It will be my last game at Anfield, and I’ll say goodbye to the fans before the Africa Cup of Nations.”
It’s worth noting that Salah has only scored four goals this season. After the Brighton match, he will travel to Morocco to participate with the Egyptian national team in the Africa Cup of Nations, which runs until mid-January 2026.
