Mohamed Awad has caused a crisis within Zamalek just moments before the White Knights’ match against Kaizer Chiefs in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.
Ahmed Abdel Raouf opted to start Mohamed Sobhi in goal for the match, which will be held at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in South Africa.
Awad strongly objected to Abdel Raouf’s decision, especially since he had started in Zamalek’s last three matches and performed well.
However, Abdel Raouf insisted on his decision, and Awad refused to sit on the bench, leading to his exclusion from the squad and the inclusion of young goalkeeper Mahmoud El Shenawy.
It is expected that Abdel Nasser Mohamed, the team’s director of football, will impose a harsh penalty on Awad for this decision, especially since the current situation within Zamalek cannot withstand any further crises.
From the start of the season, Mohamed Sobhi was Zamalek’s first-choice goalkeeper until he was injured before the Egyptian Super Cup, forcing Abdel Raouf to rely on Awad.
Awad shone in Zamalek’s Super Cup semi-final match against Pyramids, played in the final against Al Ahly, and finally in the group stage match against ZESCO United.
