Despite a legendary and historic career spent representing the Swedish national team, Zlatan Ibrahimović has sparked widespread controversy and triggered a form of “political tension” in the Balkans after officially announcing his support for another nation during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The division stems from the retired striker’s complex family background; Ibrahimović was born in Sweden to a Bosnian father and a Croatian mother.
Zlatan Declares: I Am Rooting for Croatia
The current advisor to AC Milan’s ownership and Fox Sports analyst delivered a bold statement regarding his international allegiance for the tournament:
“I have Croatian roots on my mother’s side, so I will be supporting Croatia in this tournament.”
Geopolitical relations in the Balkan region remain highly sensitive. Both Bosnia and Croatia fought bloody, devastating wars in the 1990s following the collapse and independence from the former Yugoslavia.
Bosnian Fans Attack: “A Betrayal of Your Father”
Following his declaration, Bosnian football fans launched a fierce backlash against Ibrahimović on social media, labeling his comments as an outright “betrayal” of his father’s Bosnian heritage and a disregard for his roots.
Conversely, Croatian supporters enthusiastically celebrated “The King’s” statements. A large section of the Croatian fanbase expressed long-standing regret that Zlatan never represented Croatia internationally, asserting that a striker of his caliber would have undoubtedly secured the 2018 World Cup title for Croatia against France.
Sweden Left Sideline Despite Historical Legacy
Zlatan Ibrahimović earned 122 international caps for the Swedish national team across all competitions, scoring a record-breaking 62 goals to become his country’s all-time top scorer. Nevertheless, the veteran icon’s heart during this World Cup will not be with the yellow and blue, but firmly with the Vatreni of Croatia.
