Renowned journalist Gastón Edul has revealed that the Argentine Football Association (AFA) has submitted an official request to FIFA, seeking permission for the national team to wear their alternative blue shirt during the upcoming 2026 World Cup semi-final clash against England.
According to the pre-approved tournament draw, England is designated as the “home team” and will consequently wear their traditional white kit. Logically, there is no color clash with Argentina’s iconic sky-blue and white striped home jersey.
However, the AFA is pushing for a special exception to don their full-blue away kit. According to Edul, this move is driven by pure “superstition” and optimism regarding the use of the alternative jersey in decisive World Cup showdowns.
The Historic Symbolism of the Blue Kit
The blue Argentine jersey carries immense symbolic value for football fans. It is the exact color worn by Diego Armando Maradona during the legendary 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England. There is a strong collective feeling in the country that this kit brings good fortune to La Albiceleste.
FIFA is expected to deliver its final decision on the matter during the official technical meeting scheduled for Tuesday, exactly 24 hours before kick-off.
