Egypt lost to Nigeria 4-2 on penalties after a goalless draw in regulation time in the third-place match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Egypt had lost in the semi-finals to Senegal 1-0, while Nigeria was eliminated on penalties by hosts Morocco after a 0-0 draw in regulation and extra time.
Egypt’s performance against the Super Eagles was much better than against the Lions of Teranga, but they failed to create any real chances against Nigeria, who had a goal disallowed after a VAR review.
The match went to penalties at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca. Nigeria missed their first penalty thanks to a brilliant save by goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir, giving Egypt a chance to finally take the lead.
However, Mohamed Salah’s first penalty was poorly executed and saved by the Nigerian goalkeeper, before Omar Marmoush missed the second penalty with a very poor shot.
Shobeir was unable to save any more penalties, while Ramy Rabia and Mahmoud Saber converted their spot kicks, before Ademola Lookman sealed the victory for Nigeria, securing their eighth third-place finish in the tournament’s history.
It’s worth noting that Egypt finished fourth for the fourth time, having previously done so in 1976, 1980, and 1984.
