Brahim Diaz has etched his name in the history books of the Moroccan national team and the Africa Cup of Nations after his performance in the Atlas Lions’ quarter-final match against Cameroon.
Diaz scored the opening goal after following up on Ayoub El Kaabi’s header, marking his fifth goal in the 2015 AFCON tournament being held in Morocco.
The Real Madrid star equaled the historic record held by Mohamed Nagy Gedo, the Egyptian national team legend, in the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, when he scored against five different opponents.
Diaz scored against Comoros, Mali, and Zambia in the group stage, then Tanzania in the round of 16, and now against Cameroon. He will have the opportunity to break Gedo’s record if he scores in the semi-final against the winner of the Algeria-Nigeria match.
Meanwhile, Diaz became the first player to score in five consecutive Africa Cup of Nations matches since 1968, when Ghana’s Osei Kuffo achieved the feat.
The 25-year-old leads the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations scoring charts with five goals, two ahead of his closest rivals, Mohamed Salah, Riyad Mahrez, and Victor Osimhen.
