The 23-year-old Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder opened the scoring for Sweden in the 7th minute and capped off their 5-1 victory with a final goal in the 96th minute. On both occasions, Ayari stood still, raising his hands to apologize to the thousands of Tunisian fans packed into the Monterrey stadium.

While football fans are used to players showing respect against former clubs, Ayari has never played for Tunisia. This left many neutral viewers questioning his muted reaction.

The Story of a Father’s Advice and Dual Nationality

The explanation lies in Ayari’s roots: he is of Tunisian descent through his father. Before the Qatar 2022 World Cup, the Carthage Eagles heavily scouted Ayari, but he ultimately turned down the call-up.

At the time, his father, Abbas Ayari, revealed to the Swedish press that he was the one who advised his son to wait for Sweden.

“Yasin was very interested in representing Tunisia,” his father explained. “But I personally asked him to play for Sweden. This country welcomed us, nurtured Yasin’s talent, and provided him with everything he needed to become a professional. It was his moral duty to give back to this nation.”

Ayari himself echoed these thoughts previously, stating: “I’ve played for Sweden since I was a kid in the youth ranks. I grew up here and I feel Swedish. It felt completely natural to continue my international career with the team I started with.”
