Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono has spoken for the first time since the death of Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, expressing his profound grief and difficulty coming to terms with what happened.
Andorra published the Equatorial Guinea international’s statement following the incident during Monday’s match between the teams, when Owono collided with De Miguel at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium.
“These are the hardest days of my life. It is difficult to find the words, and I am struggling to process what happened,” Owono said.
“I feel immense pain over the loss of Jesús. I am thinking of him, his family and everyone who loved him.”
He continued: “I know there will be many things to address, and I will face whatever comes with all due respect.”
He concluded: “But right now, honestly, I cannot think of anything other than Jesús and the pain we are experiencing. Rest in peace, Jesús.”
Tenerife announced De Miguel’s death on the morning of Tuesday, 3 November, after he had been taken to hospital following the collision. His passing, at the age of 30, plunged Spanish football into mourning.
Andorra announced that psychological support would be available to players, coaching staff and anyone else at the club who needed it. They also requested the postponement of their next match against Real Mallorca because of the incident’s profound emotional impact.
The club urged that Owono be treated with the utmost sensitivity and respect, while confirming that they remained in contact with Tenerife and the relevant authorities to offer cooperation and support to those affected by the tragedy.
