Real Madrid announced in an official statement that Dani Carvajal has suffered a new injury and will undergo surgery.
The Spanish international had just returned from injury and played a few minutes in the El Clásico match against Barcelona, leaving the field without pain. However, on Monday, he complained of some discomfort and immediately underwent comprehensive medical tests.
According to Real Madrid’s statement, the 34-year-old was diagnosed with an unstable body within the joint in his right knee, and as a result, he will undergo a joint fusion surgery.
The statement did not specify a specific date for Carvajal’s return to action, but Spanish newspapers confirmed that it is unlikely the Real Madrid captain will participate in any matches again this year.
Carvajal’s expected absence is estimated at between two and three months, meaning he could even miss the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.
In Carvajal’s absence, Trent Alexander-Arnold will have the opportunity to play regularly at right-back, with Raúl Asensio and Fede Valverde as his replacements.
Arnold also returned early from his injury but did not play in El Clásico. Xabi Alonso is expected to give him a starting role starting with the upcoming match against Valencia.
