Slot blames refereeing for Liverpool’s defeat to Manchester City

Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed his outrage at several refereeing decisions during the team’s two Premier League matches against Manchester City this season.

The Dutchman feels that too many controversial decisions (50-50) have gone against Liverpool, including several in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat.

When asked about Dominique Szoboszlai’s red card at a press conference, Slot said: “When you asked me, ‘What did you think of the decision?’ I thought, ‘What exactly do you mean?'”

He continued, incredulously: “Do you mean the goal we had disallowed against City from a header? Or the penalty they were awarded in their away game against us? Do you mean the clear red card for the foul on Mo Salah in the second half? Or the penalty they were awarded in the second half? Which one are you referring to?”

He added: “Just in two games, and those who follow Liverpool know how many similar decisions I can recall from all the other games as well, just in these two games, all the big decisions that could have gone either way or been disputed.”

He continued: “I can accept the fact, even though I don’t like it, that the referee follows the rules. Dominik fouled Haaland in that last play, a clear shirt pull, and Haaland was through on goal and would have scored, so it’s a red card.”

Slot added: “That’s the rules, and you follow them. But if you follow the rules and there’s a clear shirt pull by Guehi on Mo Salah, who’s been scoring that goal every single time for eight years—100 out of 100 times he scores that goal—and it’s not a red card, then that’s where my biggest frustration lies.”

He concluded: “I can live with Szoboszlai’s sending off, but we’re asking for the rules to be followed.”
